Personality: Nynaeve is a forceful woman who is well known for her acerbic tongue and ferocious temper. Men and women alike have been known to shy away from her, fearing her verbal wrath (and the occasional thump from a stick). She is surprisingly strong considering her small stature, but her temper can often make her seem like she’s ten feet tall. If you see her stalking your way, it’s often best to quickly go elsewhere or get out of her way. Despite this, she is not a needlessly cruel woman—she simply believes she knows best and doesn’t have the patience to deal with anyone trying to tell her otherwise. She is used to leading people and used to being doubted; she was raised to the position of the Wisdom in her home village at a very young age. Wisdom is a term used to describe a village healer, and is the female counterpart to a village Mayor. To have a young woman telling the villagers how they should handle their affairs raised quite a few eyebrows, but Nynaeve’s natural affinity for politics and her scathing retorts soon silenced those who would claim she was too young for the role. She was a good Wisdom, handling both the Village Council and Women’s Circle (the male and female group of elders, respectively) with her stubbornness.

This stubbornness is part of what makes her such a good healer. Nynaeve does not give up if she believes she can save someone, using a mixture of her bountiful knowledge of helpful herbs and her ability to use the One Power (magic, in simple terms). She healed people who had been badly maimed to the point that not even a scar remained, something that no Wisdom had ever been able to do before. She could also listen to the winds, able to accurately predict when storms were on the horizon. These events all hinted at Nynaeve’s ability to use the One Power, though she had no idea that was the case.

Nynaeve is unique in the sense that she can only use the One Power when she’s angry. As a result, her anger defines much of her character, and she openly embraces the emotion rather than regretting it or trying to hide it away. Anger is useful. Anger makes her able to fight, able to heal, able to be strong. Her inability to channel unless she is furious is due to a mental block that she accidentally inflicted upon herself. Indeed, Nynaeve first believes the One Power to be ‘filthy’, and wants nothing to do with it. It’s likely that this stigma helped her suppress her own abilities; when she’s told that she can channel, she denies it outright and searches desperately for another explanation. Eventually though, she accepts this ability of hers as a means to better help heal others, and begins to rely on her terrible temper so that she can channel.

Due to her role as Wisdom, Nynaeve is used to being in control and getting her way—according to her, she speaks sense, and anyone who doesn’t see that is a fool. Cultural differences often make her balk, and she has a very difficult time accepting things that aren’t ‘normal’ in the way she knows them. Nynaeve is not intentionally malicious about this as much as she’s simply slow to change. Despite her self-assured nature, Nynaeve has shown that she can be quite meek if talked down to by a more experienced woman. She might bristle, but she displays the ability to bite her tongue and be humble… even if she does so grudgingly. It’s hard for her to berate someone who can use calm logic, particularly if they turn her own temper against her. In fact, they usually leave her sputtering, and in some cases, wholly embarrassed. If a person humiliates her though, she’ll remember it for life. No mere apologies will be enough to earn Nynaeve’s forgiveness though her bad temper towards that individual might ease with time. Might is the key word. She is a proud person, so sure of her own wits and skill that it almost borders on self-centeredness. She is a hypocritical woman, often lecturing people on being too reckless or stubborn before promptly turning around and throwing herself into danger or metaphorically digging her heels in until they bleed. She never seems to be aware of this contradiction, and for whatever reason, other characters in the series never mention it.

Nynaeve was raised like the son her father never had. He taught her to track the land as well as any man, as well as to hunt and fish. She never became a tomboy though, and as she grew older, she began to openly embrace her femininity. She harbors a secret love for beautiful gowns made with fine silks and though she used to greatly disapprove of anything immodest, (too clingy or showing too much cleavage) she has softened her views considerably. It actually frightened Nynaeve when she realized that she was a pretty woman, that she wanted to be seen as pretty. She seemed to have some notion in her head that she needed to be all hard edges: appreciating softer curves might have felt like weakness. Another major insecurity she holds about herself is her so-called lack of courage. She refers to herself as a coward several times, despite her almost insane acts of bravery throughout the series. Admitting it to other people is nearly enough to bring her to tears, for she despises her self-perceived cowardice. It is also suggested that she blocked herself from the One Power out of fear of how much she could really wield, though this was not a conscious action.

Though she is often described as acting like ‘a bear with a sore-tooth’, Nynaeve cares deeply about those she considers friends and those who are good people. She would risk everything for the former, and often runs herself ragged if it meant healing the injured. This passion for healing is second to none, and with her quick mind, Nynaeve discovers several ways to heal conditions that were thought incurable, such as being permanently cut off from the One Power. She walks firmly in the Light, and morally, is a good and just person. Though I imagine the decision would haunt her, she would kill someone if there was no other choice. She’d much rather leave them bound and subdued, however. Nynaeve is a fiercely loyal companion despite her flaws. She can be patient and has a good ear for listening to problems.

As ferocious and hypocritical as she might be, Nynaeve is an extremely complex woman who sometimes simply struggles to understand herself and adapt accordingly. Despite all she thinks knows and all she has seen, she is still growing and changing.
